Headdresses in Brittany

Although long hair was the common use for the women, it would not have been acceptable to leave the hair in the wind. Showing the head and particularly the hair was not usual in Brittany 100 years ago. Wearing headdress was therefore the rule. During weekdays, the headdress was usually reduced to work in the fields, but on Sundays or on other special occasions, all the embroideries were shown. It has to be noted that each village and regions had singularities in the costume and headdress, and it was therefore easy to know were the women were from. The use of such headdress disappeared quite recently, and even in the 50s, their use was still common. Only a few old women can still be seen wearing headdress nowadays, particularly in Pont l'Abbé ("bigouden" region) or Plougastel Daoulas.
